Two of the best professional golfers in Nigeria-Umoh Edet and Oche Odoh have set their sights on the Kenya Commercial Bank regional Tour, which will be taking place in five regions. The events, a Sunshine Tour professional golf tournament will be held in Kenya in August, courtesy of Kenya Commercial Bank.
KCB during the week, announced a Sh12.5m sponsorship package for the KCB East African Golf Tour, whose grand finale at Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa will now feature professionals from South Africaâ€™s Sunshine Tour, one of the six continental pro tours in the world. Odoh and Edet are not new to the Sunshine Tour, having played on the tour for a while now.
As the time for the event draw nearer, other Nigerian top professional golfers are also keen on competiting in the event. There are talks by Sunshine Tour officials that Nigeria may be their next point of call since they have been able to get to Kenya.
Speaking during the inauguration of the new KCB regional tour whose events will be held in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, KCBâ€™s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Sam Kimani said the launching of the Tour marked a milestone in the development of professional golf in the country.
The Tour will feature eight tournaments with a total prize money of Sh12.5 million, of which Sh7.6 million is set aide for the final event at Nyali.
Kimani said the prize money for local events such as those in Thika, Nyanza and Nakuru had been increased by Sh50,000 to Sh450,000 while Muthaiga ones will be up by Sh150,000 to Sh550,000.
â€œThe incorporation of the Sunshine Tour and the expansion of the previous KCB Pro-Am Tour into a regional series are intended to promote the KCB brand across the Eastern and Southern African region,â€ he said.
