N5.2b Electricity Fraud: Court grants Ugbane, 8 others N450m bail

A Federal high court sitting in Abuja yesterday granted the Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Senator Nicholas Ugbane and eight others a fresh bail of N450million.

Ugbane and the eight others are standing trial on N5.2billion fraud before the high court.

The trial high court judge, Justice Garba Umar who granted the accused persons  bail on liberal terms yesterday in a composite ruling he read on their bail application held that each of them would not breathe their air of freedom until they are able to produce a bail bond of N50million each with one surety in like sum who must be a civil servant not below the rank of a director in the civil service.

Other beneficiaries of the bail yesterday include Engineer Samuel Ibi Gekpe, Dr Abdullahi Aliyu, Simon Kirde Nanle, Eng Lawrence Kayode Orekoya, Abdul Garba Jahun, Barrister Kayode Oyedeji, Hon Jibo Mohammed and Hon Ndudi Elumelu.

They were all remanded in EFCC custody Thursday evening till yesterday morning following the inability of the trial judge, Justice Garba Umar, to take decision on the separate applications argued on their behalf by their counsel.

The EFCC, it would be recalled, had slammed a 156-count charge of fraud against the accused persons last year.
