N-Delta youths support Akunyili on hand over memo

By Emma Amaize & George Onah
Port-Harcourt — Youths from the Niger Delta region, under the aegis of Niger Delta Youth Movement, NDYM, yesterday, threw their weight behind the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, over what they described as her sincere  stand on the state of the nation.

President of the group, Mr Ajulisan Akumagba, who disclosed the position of youths of the region while addressing newsmen in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, said Prof. Akunyili had demonstrated a sense of  respect and love for the Nigeria’s constitution.

He said the Minister deserves commendations for her bold step and not blackmail.
According to him, “those who are asking for the head of Akunyili are anti-democratic elements and enemies of Nigeria.

That woman is a special gift to this country. What has she done to deserve crucifixion? She has only called for respect for the  laws of the land.

“The constitution is straight on the issue at stake. Every body knows that in the absence of the head, the vice takes over.

Why are they bringing in ethnicity into it? If they do not want a President from the Niger Delta, then they should stop drilling Niger Delta oil. We have had enough of this.

“Let me tell you, if any further attempt is made to vilify her on this issue, we shall come out of our shell and they will see the reaction of an angry and marginalised region.

“We use this opportunity to let her know that Niger Delta youths are solidly behind her and shall rise up to the challenge of defending her and few other sincere persons in government. She must resist every attempt to make her resign,” he said.

Continuing, the NDYM boss reiterated the support and solidarity  of Youths of the region to the Vice President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan and berated his detractors describing them as enemies of the country’s democracy.

They expressed worry over the vacuum created by the president’s absence following the refusal of the relevant organs of government to swear  in the Vice President  as acting President, pending the return of the president.

“My brother, at times, I get surprised with the way things happen in this country. Most times, they give us room to feel cheated. If not, why on earth would they not want to hand over power to the Vice President to perform his constitutional duty as Acting President?

We love our President so much and will continue to pray for his quick recovery so that he can come  back and continue his good works, but while we wait  for God to do his work, nature abhors vacuum. In the spirit of love and unity, why are we having this segregation?
