This year’s National Sports Festival tagged Garden City Games will be used to celebrate Nigeria’s 50 years of nationhood, Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared.
Speaking recently when he met a select group of sports journalists in Port Harcourt, Amaechi said a princely sum of over N22 billion has so far been budgeted for the festival, which is being managed by the Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Tele Ikuru.
He praised Ikuru’s excellent handling of preparations for the festival and noted that it was a privilege that the state will be hosting the games when Nigeria will be 50years old.
“That is why we’re putting all necessary logistics in place aimed at ensuring that every visitor and athlete that comes for the games leave here longing for a return, because apart from our God-given natural resources we also want to make Rivers and in particular Port Harcourt a tourism destination.â€
Plan are already afoot to host a major stake-holders cum media seminar ahead of the Garden City games and the state Ministry of Information is said to be perfecting strategy for the seminar in conjunction with the leadership of the state Sports Writers Association headed by Mr Honour Sirawoo.
