Elechi accuses ‘Abuja politicians’ of sponsoring war in Ebonyi

By  Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI—GOVERNOR Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, yesterday, accused politicians of the state origin, resident in Abuja of being responsible for the renewed fighting and exchange of gunshots between soldiers and militants in the Ezza-Ezilo war.

Renewed violence
The renewed fighting at the two year disputed Ezza-Ezilo land in the early hours of Tuesday, prevented road users from plying the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway, as soldiers laboured to contain the militants’ sporadic shootings into the air.

Addressing newsmen, the state Commissioner for Information,  flanked by the Governor’s inner cabinet members, Celestine Nwali and Fred Udeogu, said that his attention had been drawn  to an orchestrated plan  “by the same group of unrepentant political demagogues, who have vowed that the Ebonyi State of our dream will not have peace.”

Govt refuses to mention names
Though the government,  despite pressures from newsmen refused to mention names, it said “what is most painful, most unfortunate and awfully regrettable is that these evil plans are the handiwork of our own Ebonyi people, most of who are domiciled in Abuja .”

The Elechi government has been having a running battle with opposition from within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which led to recent factionalization of the state chapter of the party.

The government alleged that the Abuja based politicians, were in the habit of sponsoring inciting, offensive, injurious and misleading newspaper publications against the state government, adding also that the Abuja group equally sponsored destabilizing rumours.

It noted that whereas the country celebrated the peaceful conduct of election in Anambra “a group of evil-minded political cynics in our small state of Ebonyi have hired mercenaries to further complicate the already bad situation in Ezillo.”
