Bauchi lawmaker faults proposed constitution amendment

By Patience Ogbodo

BAUCHI — A lawmaker representing  Kirfi constituency at the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Harsanu Guyaba, has described efforts to amend some sections of the Nigeria constitution as another attempt by the ruling political elite to engage in a white goose chase that will not benefit the common man.

Speaking to newsmen in Bauchi yesterday, Guyaba said the ruling elite should stop deceiving Nigerians by insinuating that they failed to provide social amenities to the people because of defects in the constitution, saying the 1999 constitution is  enough to provide leaders in the country with enough guide towards the development of infrastructure.

Guyaba said the problem was not with the constitution but its operators, adding: “The constitution cannot work on its own. It needs honest and sincere operators.

“The failure is not that of the constitution but its operators, the three organs of government. The US we copy from spent 250 years with a single constitution with only seven clauses amended. Our constitution is just 10 years but 136 clause are being proposed for amendment,” he said.

According to the him, unless the Nigerian political elite exercise apparent sincerity at constitutional making or amendment at both national and state legislatures, there would be no better constitution than the one the country operates today.
