25, 000 policemen for Anambra poll

By  Kingsley Omonobi

ABUJA—Twenty-four  hours to the Anambra State governorship election, the Nigeria Police Force has made good its resolve to ensure a free and conducive atmosphere for the conduct of the election,  with the deployment of 25, 000 policemen, the highest number ever sent to a state.

Also deployed for the elections were seven Squadrons of Mobile Police personnel from across  the country, accompanied by their Commanders because of the vow by the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo not to dance to the tune of any of the candidates, as he would be a neutral arbiter during the election.

Vanguard gathered that as a result of earlier security reports, which indicated that thugs had been recruited and heavily armed by some governorship candidates and their party leadership to cause confusion and destabilize the election, the police high command further ordered the deployment of bomb disposal experts, Police Dogs with capability to sniff arms and ammunition as well as several scores of patrol vehicles fitted with communication gadgets.

Already, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. John Ahmadu has relocated to Awka, the Anambra State capital, on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, to coordinate the security aspect of the election.

Vanguard further gathered that all policemen deployed to Anambra for the election, including those from the South West, South-South, and Middle Belt would be given special identification tags with a view to fish out impersonators, following reports that fake police uniforms had been procured by some of the contestants to help perpetuate rigging.
