Infrastructure renewal, security, education top Uba’s agenda

Former Personal Assistant to President Olusegun Obansanjo and the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in the February  gubernatorial election in Anambra state, Dr. Andy Uba has assured the people of Anambra state of massive infrastructural renewal if he wins the forthcoming election.

The Labour Party candidate, in a special news release, noted that Anambraians have no business with poverty as the state has the potential to be the nation’s number one business and investment haven within the first two years of his administration.

“Our resolve is to harness the vast potential of the state to engender massive infrastructural renewal unprecedented in the annals of state governance in the country.” Under our infrastructural renewal programme, we will ensure that in the first two years of our administration, every local government would have felt the impact of governance through the provision of high priority infrastructure in each of the local government areas of the state.”

“We will achieve this through creative boosting of internally generated revenue to a height never attained in the history of the state.”

Uba said further:  “we will also use the goodwill we enjoyed while serving the nation in the presidency to bring investors, local and foreign, to invest in Anambra, the nation’s natural home of commerce and industry.”

The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate disclosed that to achieve this dream of Great Anambra, and turn the state into an investors’ haven, security will also top the list of his agenda.

He said: ‘my administration will tackle security issue on two fronts. One, through our infrastructural renewal programme, we will create massive employment thereby productively engaging our teeming unemployed youths.

Through direct labour projects, conscious efforts shall be made to engage thousands of our unemployed youths productively within the first two years of our administration.”

“The second leg of our security agenda, according to Dr Uba “is to modernize the police through sophisticated weapons, functional vehicles, and up to date communications gadgets.

“Our programme on security is such that will make the Nigerian Police Force, Anambra Command , the model of how a modern police formation should operate. Through private and public sector participation, we will put in place a proactive and effective security outfit that will be on top of crimes, violent or otherwise. We will work to ensure that within a short period, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes are brought to their knees.”

Dr. Uba, in the release, also expressed his resolve to take Anambra back to the golden era where the state was the leading light in education in the country. Said he: “A state that produced such global intellectual giants as Dr. Namdi Azikiwe, Prof. Chinua Achebe, Ambassador Emeka Anyaokwu, Prof. Phillip Emeagwali, Dr Ukpabi Asika,  among others, has no business with ignorance.”

“We will reignite the torch of knowledge and will ensure that all our children walk the path of quality but accessible education once again. Through     deft deployment of public and private sector resources, we will ensure that every Anambra child has access to quality education from our first year in office”.

It will be recalled that Dr. Andy Uba won the gubernatorial election of Anambra state in 2007 and was sworn in as governor. Few days into office, the court however, ruled that his predecessor in office, Mr. Peter Obi, had not completed his tenure.

Dr. Uba fought to reclaim his mandate, as he urged the court to reinstate him after the tenure of Mr. Obi would have expired. He, however, lost the case.

Political watchers say that the February 6, 2010 gubernatorial election in Anambra state promises to be a landmark battle among four major gladiators, bur Dr Andy is particularly popular for the decent and legal ways he employed in fighting to reclaim his mandate. He is seen as a perfect gentleman with rare leadership traits.

The contention is that a winner would emerge among the quartet of Dr. Uba of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, the incumbent governor of the state and All Progressive Grand Alliance candidate, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of the People’s Democratic Party and Dr. Chris Ngige of Action Congress.
