Death toll in Sapele fracas rises to four

By Emma Arubi
WARRI—The death toll in the fracas that broke out in Sapele last Saturday has risen to four.

Two persons were initially reported dead as a result of the fight which broke out among some youths in the area.

Meanwhile, one of the five persons shot during the fracas is still in critical condition at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Besides, the arms of the hospitalised victim are said to have been paralysed.

The killings allegedly engineered by a Sapele youth (names withheld) was in retaliation for a minor fracas between friends at a popular hotel on New Year day, which led to the stabbing of one person.

Meanwhile, efforts are on-going by political leaders in Sapele to douse the tension generated by the gruesome killings, even as the Chairman of Warri North Local Government, Dr. Godwin Ebosa, maintained that he was not present at the scene of the incident as was wrongly reported.

But, it was learnt that some prominent leaders and politicians in the area were present when the fracas broke out trying to broker peace.
