BENIN — Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has called for vigilance in subsequent elections in the country, saying mischief makers who attempted to rig the re-run election in Etsako Central were yet to accept the logic of the ballot box.
Speaking when he received a coalition of civil society organisations at Government House, Benin yesterday, he noted that experience from the Etsako Central re-run election revealed that Nigerians must commit themselves to “one man, one vote,†insisting that good governance was impossible without the people.
He, therefore, urged politicians to work their ways into the hearts of the people with their performance.
Receiving the independent monitoring report on the election from the group, Oshiomhole said the role of electoral bodies in the conduct of elections was critical, just as he said security agencies were important to the success of a free and fair election.
He commended the coalition of civil society organisation for their independent report on the re-run House of Assembly election in Etsako Central local government area of Edo State.
Assuring that the state government would support the activities of the civil society organisation, especially in the area of enlightening the people on the need for one man, one vote, the governor enjoined the group to also encourage Nigerians to contribute towards the funding of civil society groups.
ThPe leader of the group, Rev David Ugolor who presented the report to the governor, said the election was free and fair adding, that it was the best that has ever happened in the country
