A United States based group, the National Association of Yoruba Descendants in North America (Egbe Omo Yoruba) has declared that the country is adrift and it appears that a power vacuum has been created due to the condition of the president’s health.
In a statement by the its National Secretary for Public Affairs, Oladapo Odunlami, they argued that “the health of the Nation is adversely affected and it has become unclear who is running Nigeria and overseeing the welfare of its approximately 150 million peopleâ€.
The statement said the President should resign to take care of his deteriorating health, because it is incompatible with the physical demand of his office;.
“Section 144 of the Nigerian Constitution gives the Executive Council power to declare that the President is incapable of discharging the functions of his office on health grounds, when it is apparently so.
“Section 145 of the Nigerian Constitution requires the President to communicate with the Senate, his inability to discharge the duties of his office, due to ill health or other reasons, so that the Vice President can officially be recognized as the Acting President. This should not be a problem since all he has to do is to communicate back to the Senate when he is ready to resume his official duty,†Odunlami added.
