NULGE tasks Obi on appointment of ANSIEC members

By  Enyim Enyim

ONITSHA—Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees(NULGE), yesterday advised Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State to appoint credible, qualified and suitable persons as members of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission(ANSIEC), following his plan to reconstitute the body, five months after the expiration of the tenure of former members of the commission.

Speaking to reporters, the National Vice president of the union in-charge of the South East zone, Chief Goddy Ibekwe said the only way to make sure that there was a free, fair and acceptable local government election any time,  would be for the Governor to ensure that those appointed for the job are men and women of proven integrity.

He appealed to the State House of Assembly to approve the Governor’s list of the members for the commission, provided the persons so picked are of impeccable character, to enable them do a good job in the interest of the people of the state.

“The reconstitution of ANSIEC by Governor Obi is a welcomed development because the body has to be in existence, first and foremost before you can talk of conducting local government election, which we have been clamouring for,” he said.

“Governor Obi is doing it now because he feels it is the appropriate time for him to do so. He didn’t need anybody to push him around  to carry out his constitutional duty. It will help any Governor coming in on March 17, 2010 to hold the council polls as soon as possible.”
