NUJ to shut newspaper houses for non-payment of salaries

By Dayo Johnson

AKURE—THE Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) yesterday threatened to seal-off Newspaper Houses whose owners failed to pay salaries of  workers as at when due.

President of the NUJ, Mallam Garba Mohammed,  who said in a statement at the end of a four-day National Executive Council  (NEC) meeting of the union, expressed concern that many journalists were being owed many months arrears of salaries in their various media organisations, despite the fact that the proprietors were making enough profits to pay them regularly.

According to him  “We have it on good authorities that not more than four newspaper houses for instance, are actually paying salaries of their workers regularly while many had not paid their workers for months. Media owners are advised to find ways of ensuring prompt payment of salaries to journalists in their employ as and when due.

The Union (NUJ) may be forced to take appropriate steps to address the growing trend of non-payment of salaries as well as the arbitrary sacking of journalists.
