The 2nd edition of the Lagos State Triathlon Championship bankrolled by BAGCO Nigeria Limited ended last Sunday at Apapa Local Government with Effiong Eyo emerging as overall winner of the duathlon event.
The event which saw 17 athletes (14 males and three females) from all the local government area in Lagos State compete in athletics and cycling, produced Eyo as winner for the second time with a time of 2mins 30 seconds. Eyo won the maiden edition of the competition.
Adeyemi Smile finished second with a time of 2mins.28 seconds, while Lekan Badmus recorded 2mins. 40 seconds to finish third.
In the female category, Lilian Odumegwe emerged overall winner with 3mins. 20 seconds, Vivian Okafor recorded 3mins. 23seconds to place second while Juilet Akaegbu came third with a time of 3mins. 28 seconds.
According to the chairman of the Lagos State Association, Dr. Sikuade Jagun, the essence of the competition is to create more awareness for the event among Lagosians and to them interested in triathlon. Secondly, he said it is aimed at perfecting their organizational ability and to place Lagos as the potential host for International Triathlon event.
“For continuity sake and to popularize the game, the organisers have decided that every month there will be a major event in a local government. This is the second edition and there are plans to hold the event every month.We intend to popularize the game, that is why we are taking it to different local government areas in Lagos State. The last edition was held in Alawusa and the third edition take place in January, at the Surulere Local Government,†Jagun said.
