Court annulment of Soludo’s nomination: Nothing has changed – Campaign organisation

By Vincent Ujumadu

Awka-THE Soludo Campaign Organization has reacted to the annulment of the nomination of its principal, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the February 6, 2010 election in Anambra State by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, saying that far as it is concerned, nothing has changed.

The reaction came just as members of the Soludo Campaign Organization have been meeting in Awka to decide on the next line of action following the latest development.

Christian Udechukwu, head of media for the organization, who spoke on behalf of the organization, urged supporters of PDP not to be disturbed by the latest development.

He explained that it was those who are afraid of the impending victory of PDP at the February 2010 election, that were behind the apparent confusion in the party, noting: “The game plan of those doing this is to cause confusion, knowing that PDP will win the governorship election. There is a clear distinction between the party and its candidate and there is no doubt that PDP will be listed on the ballot paper in February.

“The Supreme Court had ruled that all the political parties have the right to nominate their candidates and PDP has done that. The Supreme Court had also ruled in the case of Senator Hosiah Ehinlawo vs Olusola Oke that the judiciary should not interfere in how political parties decide their candidates.

The Nigerian constitution also protects the rights of individuals to free association and the rights of political parties to elect, nominate and or appoint their candidates for public elections. The right of PDP flag bearer is guaranteed under the law.

Our position in the campaign organization is that with the handover of the flag to Prof Soludo, it is now a party affair and not that of Soludo/Anosike any longer. We are therefore looking forward positively to the outcome of the matter and nothing can change the fact that Soludo has been nominated by his party and is standing by him.”

According to him, the reason PDP has become the target of attack is the fear of the Soludo/Anosike ticket by other political parties. He added that the emergence of Soludo as the flag bearer of the PDP has elevated the politics of Anambra State to an enviable level.

On what should happen since the last date for the substitution of candidates is December 8 when the court had adjourned the case to December 13, the campaign organisation spokesman stated that the party’s lawyers were already handling the matter and would resolve it as soon as possible.
