THE General Overseer of Bible Life Church, Bishop Leonard Umunna, has bagged the Heart of Gold Leadership Award of the British Society of Commerce.

Presenting the award at an elaborate event held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, recently, the organisers said the nomination and approval of Bishop Umunna for the award were in recognition of the cleric’s numerous roles in the development of Ajegunle in Ajeromi Local Government area of Lagos State.

In a citation read before the presentation of the award, it was revealed that the cleric’s decision to site the headquarters of his church in an area considered as a slum when he had all the opportunities to build it in highbrow areas of the state, was a testimony of a man who is not moved by material wealth but by the will of God.

Umunna’s invaluable contribution to the development of education through the establishment of schools and a college also added to the reasons for the award.
The organisers also commended the cleric for the establishment of a hospital, which, according to them, has helped a great deal in rendering medical services to people at affordable costs.
In his acceptance speech, Bishop Umunna dedicated the award to God who, he said, made the successes achievable. He informed the gathering that right from birth God had always ordered his steps in all his endeavours; urging one and all to give their lives to Jesus Christ to enable Him direct their individual affairs. He said it was only in doing so that they would experience real success.
The cleric also observed that human recognition and awards were ephemeral, but that the real recognition was that which came from God.

“I thank the British Society of Commerce for their kind consideration. I have got a lot of awards, it is good that one’s contributions to the society are being appreciated, but the greatest commendation and award are those that come from the Almighty. I challenge everyone here to do a good deed today; for we shall be remembered by our good works,” Umunna said.

The award was part of the events to mark the 63rd anniversary of the British Society of Commerce.
