THISÂ is the cost paid by God, the offering of His Son, that through the death of one Son, He may obtain many sons by faith in the death of the one Son offered to bear the sins of the many.Â This is why God says: â€œFor I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no moreâ€ (Hebrews 8:12).
This is the New Covenant relationship of a just God to the churches of God – God adopts the redeemed from the condemnation of the Law through the propitiatory death of Jesus and thus ushered mankind into his kingdom on the basis of mercy.
Believers made sons and daughters are those to whom God says – â€œI will be and I am merciful to your unrighteousness, and your sins and your iniquities will I remember no moreâ€.
The Law as in act of mercy
It is for the knowledge of the mercifulness of His Father that the Lord taught the Law of Moses to Israel.Â The Law was given to Israel dead in unrighteousness, dead in sins and in iniquities.Â And it is to such an Israel that God sent Jesus to show them the Way back to the Father.Â Jesus taught the Law of Moses to show Israel that they could not keep the Law.
The Law was given that Israel may know the hopelessness of manâ€™s efforts to keep the law under bondage of sin.
â€œFor as many as are the works of the law are under the curse:Â for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.Â But that no man is justifieth by the law in the sight of God, it is evident; for the Just shall live by faithâ€¦
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believeâ€¦Wherefore the law was our school master to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faithâ€ (Galatians 3:10-12, 22, 24).
Moses gave the Law to the Adamic Race of Mankind instanced by Israel. The Lord Jesus reminded Israel that they were of the Adamic Race of Mankind who were to be redeemed from their fallen state by the Seed of the Woman.Â Thus the judgment of sin in Chapter 3 of Genesis included the promise of redemption through Him who would be born of a Virgin.
â€œAnd the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heelâ€ (Genesis 14-15).
What is this that the Serpent did?Â This was what he did, he â€œbeguiled the woman.
â€œAnd the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done?Â And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eatâ€ (Genesis 3:13).
In this curse of the serpent, the promise of redemption through the seed of the woman was made.Â The Law was given to man under the curse of the law to lead mankind through Israel to Christ.
The work of the Lord in the four synoptic Gospels was to teach Israel the truth that their salvation from the condemnation of the law, was only possible through His death as the offering for sin (2Cor 5:21).Â Israelâ€™s faith in salvation by the law, salvation through the keeping of Moses Law had to be replaced by faith in Jesusâ€™s Blood offered for the remission of sins.
In the fifth Chapter of the Gospel of Matthew the Lord taught the purpose of His incarnation – He was sent to fulfill the Law so as to bring to an end the reign of sin.Â The Law was to teach the fact that man under bondage of sin could not keep the law and so escape the curse of the law.
So Jesus would show what the Law said to Israel in every detail of the Law and would explain what was demanded by God in that which the law prescribed.
â€œYe have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not commit adultery (Ex 20:14): But I say unto you, thou whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hast committed adultery with her already in his heartâ€ (Matthew 5:27).
Moses says to you that you should not refrain from the act of adultery and that the charge of adultery should be confirmed by at least two witnesses.Â But I say unto you that adultery is a matter of the thoughts of the heart.Â You are adulterers before God by the thoughts of your heart.
Your carrying out the lusts of your heart is only the manifestation of your adulterous thoughts. Moses commands you, says the Lord, that you should not give expression to the thoughts of your hearts, but I say unto you that your heart is adulterous because you are sold to sin and are under the bondage to sin.Â You are children of the First Adam:
â€œGod saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continuallyâ€ (Genesis 6:5).
â€œYou have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not kill; and whosever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I (Jesus) say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fireâ€ (Matthew 5:21-22).
Moses says that you should not kill – but I say to you if you are angry with your brother without cause you are already a murderer, even though your brother is alive.Â Moreover I say unto you if you insult your brother you are in danger of the council; and if you by your word you hold your brother in contempt, you are in danger of hell fire.
