Resign or face legal battle, Edo PDP warns defected LG bosses

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called on the seven council chairmen and councilors of the party who defected to Action Congress (AC) to resign their positions or face legal battle.

The state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, who declared this to newsmen in Benin City, quoted section 12 sub-section (f) of the year 2000 Local Government law passed by the State House of Assembly, saying the law forbade the chairmen  and the councilors from operating in their various offices after they defected to AC.

Quoting from the Local Government law, Orbih said  “the seat of a member of the council shall become vacant if during his tenure of office he becomes a member of another political party.”

Orbih explained that “If not for the current strike embarked upon by the judiciary, we would have commenced legal actions against them.

“Our lawyers are ready to go. That is why we are advising them to resign honorably or be disgraced out of office.

“The salaries they are taking now are illegal and at the end of the day, they will return them to the council.”
Orbih warned that the party would no longer tolerate any form of anti-party activity, and urged members to remain strong as the party was capable of taking over the state’s Government House in the next elections.
