ABUJA—THE House of Representatives yesterday  directed that its Ethics and Privileges Committee to investigate “money-for-award” scam, in which its Committee on States and Local Governments Areas (LGAs) allegedly collected a sum of N88 million for “best LGAs” awards.

At least  110 LGAs were said have paid N400,000 each for the awards. Deputy Speaker, Usman Nafada announced the decision yesteday. The award was held in Abuja on Friday last week.

The reason for the probe was based on a complaints by Hon. Samaila Mohammed (ANPP, Plateau) that his privilege had been breached by a publication on the alleged scam, being a memmber of the Committee, invoking Order 5 (1) of the House Standing Rule, when he read out the newspaper report.

The report said the Committee on State and Local Governments had organised an award ceremony in which the awardees paid a total of N88 million.

“The report also indicated that members of the committee of which I am one shared the money”, he observed. “My privilege has been breached and so this matter should be investigated,” he said.
