Rep seat: Obot can’t jail Iwu, says INEC

By Ise-Oluwa Ige

ABUJA—The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday described as laughable the on-going legal move by one Emmanuel Obot, the former aide to ex-Governor Victor Attah, to jail its Chairman, Prof Maurice Iwu, over claims that he (Iwu) refused to issue him a certificate of return for Uyo constituency.

The electoral umpire said yesterday that Obot was being economical with the truth because he knew that he (Obot) had no order from any law court known to the 1999 constitution directing it (INEC) to issue him such certificate.

The commission which spoke to newsmen yesterday in Abuja through its Director of Legal, Ibrahim Bawa, said INEC’s claim is subject to verification and challenged Obot to produce any court order directing issuance of certificate to him.

Bawa said the on-going committal proceedings was a waste of time of the court because it was bound to collapse.

He said such proceedings could not stand except there is a valid order of the court flouted and that in the instant case there was none.
