As part of its efforts to contribute to the success of community policing initiative of the Federal Government through improved police-public relations, a non-governmental organiation, Twilight International Character Reformation Club (TICRC), is to hold a one-day seminar on character reform for the police.
According to the groupâ€™s President, Mr. Godwin Dike during a chat with Crime Guard, the seminar which is being put together by the club in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Headquarters, Abuja, holds by 10 a.m. at Agura Hotel in the Federal Capital on December 3.
He disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo would declare the seminar open while the 36 states Commissioners of Police in the federation are scheduled to attend.
Others expected at the event includes; the Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr Parry Osayande, Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Minister of Police Affairs, Dr. I.Y. Lame, Civil Society groups, among other stakeholders.
The seminar with the theme: â€œIn Vain We Build the Nation If We Do Not First Build the Manâ€, Dike said, â€œis to educate people and society in general on positive character, on the importance of harmonious co-existence amongst various groups, and on the debilitating effects of corruption on individuals, groups and the nation at largeâ€.
Mr. Dike revealed that the clubâ€™s choice of the Nigeria Police is anchored on its believe that the police institution
However, he noted that Twilight International Character Reformation Club which is affiliated to the University of Science and Philosophy, Waynesboro Virginia, United States of America, has as its target audience, the entire society.
Specifically, he disclosed that the target audience â€œincludes ethnic based organizations, military/Para-military personnel, religious organizations, ethnic militants, youth organizations, school children, teachers, market associations, local council workers, and the general publicâ€.
According to him, the club had in August 14th 2008, at Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, Victoria Island Lagos,Â in partnership with Lagos State Police Command, organized and did successfully hold a seminar titled â€œBuilding the man for a virile nationâ€.
â€œThe participants and the general public through our feedback mechanism requested the club and Nigeria police to extend the seminar topic to all the States of the Federation. That was the reason why we requested the Inspector General of police, Ogbonna Onovo, seeking his permission for approval to hold a joint seminar with the thirty-six States Police Commissioners in conjunction with the police headquarters in Abuja.
The Twilight movement, was formed by a British philosopher, Mr. Herbert Spencer in the 1870s but had asÂ its pioneer president inÂ Nigeria, foremost politician, late Senator Melford Okilo.
