ABAKALIKI—THE long awaited award of contract for reconstruction of Nkalagu-Ikem-Nsukka F117 Road, has been approved for award by the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.
The road that connects Ebonyi and Enugu States to the Northern flanks of Nigeria runs across three senatorial districts of Ebonyi Central, Enugu East and Enugu North. It was last reconstructed in the second republic and provides easy access to Nigeria Cement Company Limited, Nigercem, Nkalagu as well as the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu.
Disclosing this development to Vanguard, yesterday, the Senate Committee Chairman on Works, Senator Julius Ucha said that the N1 billion, already provided for the road, estimated to gulp N6.5 billion will be enough as 15% mobilization for the contractor to commence work on the road.
Ucha who represents Ebonyi Central Senatorial district also stated that provision has been made in the 2010 budget to further finance of the road project, lamenting that the road has an ugly history of neglect among all the federal roads in the country. He also disclosed that the contract is going to the same contractor, who bided for it in 2006 but whose consultant’s petition against the contractor, previously stalled the award of the road contract.
Speaking on the development, the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area Chairman, Dr. Sam Ugwu said his people would be relieved, adding that his council area had for over 20 years been cut-off because of the terrible state of the road. He, however, urged the Federal Government to expedite action and mobilize the contractor, so that work on the road could commence this dry season.
