Uzo-Uwani LG: My impeachment illegal, says House leader

By Tony Edike

ENUGU—THE embattled leader of the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Legislative Council in Enugu state, Mr. Leonard Maji, yesterday, described his removal as illegal, adding that the fifteen councilors, who purportedly signed his impeachment motion did so outside the legislative chamber.

Maji, was reportedly removed from office as leader of the Legislative Council last week, following a motion unanimously endorsed by his colleagues, who accused him of incompetence and corruption among other allegations, a development that has caused ripples in the council.

But speaking with Vanguard on the issue yesterday, Maji said the action of his colleagues was not only unconstitutional but was borne out of malice by some members, who were envious of his good leadership qualities, stressing that some power-hungry members of the council were bent on taking over his office through illegal means for selfish reasons.

“There was no sitting at which the decision to impeach me was discussed by the councilors, instead they stayed somewhere and purportedly signed the notice of impeachment and took an illegal decision, claiming to have removed me.  The era of lawlessness and fragrant disregard for due process is over in this country but these people appear not to be aware of this change.

Otherwise how can they sit outside the legislative chamber and claim that they have impeached me,” he added.
