Senator laments inadequate supply of power by PHCN

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—The Senator representing Owerri zone in the National Assembly, Senator Chris Anyanwu, has expressed worry that business concerns in her constituency were folding up, following what she termed “dismal public power supply by Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)”.

Senator Anyanwu made the observation when she paid an unscheduled inspection tour of the 132KV transmission station in Egbu, near Owerri.

“Public power supply is presently on its knees in Owerri senatorial zone. It is very sad that business concerns are folding up in this state. This ugly situation explains the upsurge of criminal activities in the state”, Anyanwu fumed.

She recalled how she made several trips to PHCN Headquarters, Abuja, to make representations on how to improve power supply to the state, adding that “although a new 60 MVA transformer had been installed, it has only solved a fraction of the problem”.

Responding, the Principal Manager (Transmission), who doubles as the Works Centre Manager, Egbu 132 KV Transmission Station, Mr Bede Opara, explained that the demands of electricity consumers in the state may remain a mirage if it was not supplied with a minimum of 192 mega watts of electricity from the national grid.

He disclosed that he had already made requisition for the repair of the burnt 40 MVA transformer, adding that when the burnt equipment would become operational depends largely on the response from his superiors.
