AS Nigerians continue to wait with bathed breath for the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) to call for elections months after it was supposed to have been held, renowned handball and Softball & Baseball administrator, Major-General Ishola Williams has named someone he thinks is best suited to succeed the current President, Engineer Habu Gumel.

According to the bearded General, “Cosmos Maduka, the owner of Coscharis, has the financial prowess and connection to do a great job.”

The retired General said that it was however a pity that some months after elections were due they were yet to be held, adding “we are not serious at all with everything we do in this country, not just sports”..
“The mistake, I think, was made about eight or nine years ago when I told them that a staff of the ministry of sports should not be saddled with the leadership of the NOC,” he said.

Stressing that the unseriousness he was talking about was not applicable only to sports but to “every aspect of our society because people are only interested in their own selfishness. This is not good for the growth of our sports.”
On whether Gumel should continue or vacate the seat for another person, General Williams said, “I’m not in a position to judge whether Alhaji Gumel should continue or not. I implore the journalists to do that for us or better still, Gumel should say if he wants to continue.”

It is being speculated that the Minister of Sports/Chairman National Sports Commission, NSC, Engineer Sani Ndanusa is interested in running for the position as the incumbent president of the Nigeria Tennis Federation.
This, some sports administrators have said, is responsible for the delay of the NOC calling for its elections but the PRO of the Olympic body, Tony Nezianya has come up in defence of both the NOC and its president.
