Lagos govt officials’ wives commit N7m to fight cancer

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, has disclosed that Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) spent N7 million for the treatment of 11 women with various breast cancer of the N40 million generated last year.

The Lagos First Lady disclosed this yesterday at a media briefing in Lagos as part of activities lined up for the 9th Annual National Women Conference of the committee scheduled to commence from  October 28-30 in Lagos.

According to her, the money spent was part of the proceeds it generated from last year’s conference.

Mrs Fashola who said COWLSO was committed to eliminating cancer among women disclosed that N7 million was used for the treatment of 11 women with various breast cancer requiring radiotherapy/chemotherapy and surgery, while, N13 million each was used for the construction of the Oworonshoki and Orile Agege recreation centres.

Adding that the association also channels part of its proceeds on a yearly basis to charity homes across the state, she said: “We go to charity homes and ask them what they need and we go ahead to provide it for them.”

On this year’s conference with the theme “Rethink, Renew and Resolve Your Challenges,” she said about 1,200 participants were expected at the three-day conference, including governors from various states across the federation

She said the association relied solely on funds generated from conference fees and donations to execute its projects.She expressed optimism that this year’s conference would surpass last year’s feat and reiterated that it got no form of financial support from the state government.

“The more participants we get during the conference, the more funds we would generate and the more impact we would be able to make in terms of our yearly projects,” she added.

She revealed that the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola would on October 14 and 21 commission three projects including the two recreational centres carried out by the association in the last 12 months.

According to her, the conference would feature four distinguished women as resource persons which include Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, Mrs. Iyabo Ladipo, Honourable Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and Mrs. Alsu Fisher  expected to speak on Managing Public Life, Re-inventing Family Values, The Woman Politician and Preparing for Retirement, respectively.

Mrs. Fashola added that one of the highpoint of the annual conference is the presentation of the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award to one of its members who has distinguished herself and also contributed to the realization of the ideals and aspirations of the association.

She also revealed that the idea behind the association was geared towards supporting their husbands and impacting back into the society, previous conferences were aimed at addressing issues of womanhood, “including women empowerment, youth development and issues of self.
