Handover Kowa Dam to Gombe govt, Speakers tell FG

By Ndahi Marama

MAIDUGURI — The forum of 19 Northern Speakers has called on the Federal Government to handover the Dadin Kowa Dam to Gombe State government to boost the power supply in the North-East sub-region.

Speaker of Borno State House of Assembly, Mallam Goni Ali Modu, who is also the chairman of the 19 Northern Speakers Forum and has just returned from a Northern Speakers’ Conference in Gombe, said the dam was capable of generating 39 megawatts, which will help in no small measure to address the power problem of the sub-region.

Goni said, “the construction of the dam was completed twenty years ago with the intention of generating 34 megawatts and if upgraded will generate 39 megawatts. This is sufficient to take care of the three states of Borno, Gombe and Yobe.” He said the meeting also called on the Federal Government to fund the Mambilla Hydro-electric power supply to actualise the Federal Government’s 7-point agenda.

He stated that Gombe State Government has indicated its interest to take over the dam for power generation purposes and has written to the Federal Government several times without response. He noted that the importance of the dam cannot be over-emphasised, which was why the forum added its voice to the call.

On fertilizer distribution in northern states, the Speaker further stated that the forum  called on the Federal Government to subsidise the prices of fertilizer by 50 per cent as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to boost food production in the country. He added that state and local governments should  further subsidise it.

He also called on Northern state governments to emulate Kwara State government by partnering foreign investors in mechanised farming. He stressed that the north has vast farmlands to cultivate different types of crops.
