ABUJA—The Federal Government has directed all health institutions in Nigeria to give immediate medical attention to road accident and gunshot victims brought to their domain without demanding for money or police report first.

Also the Federal Road Safety has pointed out that refusal to attend to road accident victims by health institutions is punishable under Section 10, 4, Z, regulations and attracts N50, 000 or more fees.

Addressing newsmen yesterday jointly with Deputy Inspector of Police, (DIG) Uba Ringim, Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of Federal Road Safety Commission, Osita Chidoka, Health Minister Professor Babatunde Osotimehin said, “challenges has continued to arise from lack of attention which accident and gunshot victims wounds have received in the health system.”

According to Osotimehin, innocent citizens had lost their lives due to the refusal of health institutions to attend to them when rushed to their various hospitals, adding that sometimes evidence on the cause of the accident or gunshot was destroyed due to lack of attention.

“All health institutions should attend to victims of accident or gunshot, because if we do not attend to them we will destroy evidence and lost lives.

The lives of these people are sacred just as any other persons. Whether armed robber or accident victims, they deserved to be treated”, added Osotimehin.
