Crisis looms at Okpara Agric varsity

Umudike — CRISIS is again looming at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, as the four unions in the university, have rejected the appointment of Professor Mvendega Jibo, as the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of the Council of the University.

The four unions, ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT of the university,  said they are “greatly disturbed by the antecedents” of Prof.  Jibo while he was the Pro-Chancellor at the University of Benin, which went through series of crises.

The unions at a press briefing on the campus of the university,  yesterday also expressed dismay over the frequent change of the Pro-Chancellor of the university.

Michael Okpara University has a  record of four Pro-Chancellors between January and October, a period of ten months.

The first person appointed, Dr. Dan Shere, was changed at the point of his inauguration in Abuja. He was replaced with Mr.  Abba Morro, who was later in June,  again replaced with Shere. Shere, again was in October replace with Prof. Jibo.

The unions said the frequent changes had brought instability to the institution and has also affected the execution of projects for the development of the university.

According to the unions, the appointment of Prof. Jibo “is therefore totally unacceptable to us.” They said,  “the four staff unions- ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike have noted with great dismay, the frequent change of the Pro-chancellor/Chairman of the Governing Council of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.”
