Constitution review: Senate begins retreat

KADUNA — The Senate Committee on the Review of 1999 Constitution (SCRC) will today, Friday, begin a two-day retreat in Kaduna State.

According to the Special Adviser on Media to the Deputy Senate President, Mr. Paul Odenyi, the retreat will be declared open by the Kaduna  State Governor, Architect Mohammed Namadi Sambo and will have as the Special Guest of Honour, the Senate President, Senator David Mark (GCON).

The 44-member committee is headed by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu. The committee is mandated by the Senate to deliberate on some amendment bills referred to it with regard to Land Use Act and Electoral Reforms. The Committee is also to collate views of Nigerians on other issues requiring the alteration of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria.

During the retreat, some resource persons are expected to deliver papers including the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr. Kwado Afari-Gyan and Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN).
