Army officers’ dependants undergo skills acquisition training

By Patience Ogbodo

BAUCHI — OVER 300 youths and women dependants of the Nigerian Army officers are currently undergoing training on various skills acquisition for self reliance by Defence Headquarters in collaboration with Grand Edge Career Centre.

Declaring the two-week training open at Shadawanka Barracks yesterday, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Paul Dike, who was represented by Brigadier Paul John Isang said the aim of the training was to empower the dependants of the military personnel who are always idle in the barracks for self reliance.

Dike explained that the participants were drawn from the 33 Artillery Brigades and School of Armour in Bauchi State.
He said the expected 300 participants would be trained on cake making, sewing, hat making, local soap making, knitting, barbing and hair dressing.

He urged them to take the training seriously, saying at the end of the training they would be provided with soft loans and facilities to set up their own businesses to fight poverty among themselves.

According to him, “the programme started last year with the sole aim of fighting poverty among the dependants of the military personnel and prepare them for better future as most them are idle. An idle man, they said, is a devil’s workshop.”
