Ten tennis players have emerged from an holiday tennis programme sponsored by the NNPC/Chevron Joint venture, that held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis club.
The players who emerged from over 60 participants that took part in the five-day tennis clinic after an initial screening that pruned the number from over 100 school children that showed up for the event, include Gbenga Mustapha and Lekan Fatus. Others are Biola Kuku, Bidemi Thompson, Niyi Olatunji, Emmanuel Idoko, Monday James Biodun David, Seun Olatunji and Akeem Alimi.
The event was preparatory ground towards the 11th edition of the annual NNPC/Chevron Tennis
Junior Masterâ€™s Championship. The championship has over the years become one of the foremost age-group tennis tournaments in the country.
Three coaches took the children through the rudiments of the game of tennis with emphasis on hitting forehands to playing the backhand slice from the baseline and from no-manâ€™s land, the overhead smash and the passing shot. The final days were devoted to tournaments to enable the coaches and the coordinator of the project select 10 boys who will constitute the new set of NNPC/Chevron players.
At the end of the programme, the 10 selected participants were each presented with new Babolat tennis rackets by Engineer Femi Odumabo, General Manager, Policy Government & Public Affairs Department, Chevron Nigeria Limited.
