BENIN—THOUSANDS of Bini youths yesterday crippled economic activities at Ugbowo area of Benin City, protesting the removal of Edo South representative in the reconstituted Governing Council of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Elder Joseph Idehen, and his replacement by somebody from Edo Central Senatorial District by the Federal Government.

The Federal Government had replaced the names of Elder Idehen and the Olokpe of Okpe from the Governing Council, based on the fact that they were not graduates.

They were subsequently replaced by two persons, both from the Central Senatorial District, which Bini people cried was an attempt to frustrate them from producing the next Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The protesters carried pot of fire and coffins on their heads and rained curses on any man who would be confirmed as the vice-chancellor of UNIBEN that is not a Bini indigene.

The protest, which lasted for several hours, caused traffic jam in the entire Ugbowo area, as the youths broke eggs and deposited the coffins in front of the university gate after the protest.
