As the 2009 edition of the Maltina National Reading Competition kicks off on September 30, 2009 with principals conducting the school examination in their respective schools across the country, Nigerian Breweries Plc, recently, in Lagos, explained that the competition was designed to improve the reading culture of Nigerian youths.
At the media briefing, the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr Ageni Yusuf, said the company â€œhas chosen, through the Maltina National Reading Competition, to invest in the area of our youth development with the hope of strongly influencing the quality of scholarship and human capital development in our country.â€
He stated that the competition is a key component of Nigerian Breweries youth empowerment initiative.
Because the current global crisis presents the youths of today with an uncertain future, â€œthere is therefore a strong need for us to support and strengthen our youth education programmes to give our children some hope for tomorrow.â€
Yusuf added: â€œWe believe that the Maltina National Reading Competition, designed for our secondary school students, will greatly support the laying of a solid foundation for the education of our youths. Funded by the NB/Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, the competition aligns perfectly with the objectives of the fund set up since 1994.â€
The competition is only for students in SS1-SS3 and will be conducted in four stages: School, State, Zonal, and National.
The school stage begins on September 30, 2009, the state level will be held on October 20, 2009, the zonal stage comes up between November 22 and 24, 2009 at designated cities in the six geo-political zones of the country including the FCT.
Finally, four (4) candidates emerging from each of the six geo-political zones and three (3) from FCT will proceed to the National finals in Abuja holding between January 24 and 26, 2010. The last two stages (zonal and final) will require students to have read a total of six books selected by NB Plc on which they will beÂ tested.
Prizes to be won are â€œmouth-wateringâ€ which include handsome cash rewards, books for school library, laptops desk top computers and printers.
