We’re not responsible for shortfall in workers monitisation arrears — FUTO VC

OWERRI—The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof Celestine Onwuliri, says the institution’s management is not responsible for the shortfall in the payment of the monetization arrears of its workers.

Prof Onwuliri, who disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists, also lamented that the issue was capable of compounding the current labour crisis in FUTO.

“The verified amount in respect of FUTO was N847.25million and 50 percent of that amount is N423.62million.

At the point of payment however, only 25 percent of the verified sum amounting to N211.81million  was released to Skye Bank for payment to staff of FUTO, as against the 50 percent approved by the Federal Government”, Onwuliri said.

While saying that FUTO management had made spirited attempts to redress the situation, the VC also disclosed that government had reiterated its earlier commitment to release the balance of 75 percent of monetization to staff of FUTO as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) says the error was highly regretted and all efforts were being made to correct the anomaly.
