SON advocates review of criminal law

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has advocated for a review of the criminal law.
SON Director General, Dr. John Akanya, who made the call, while receiving a delegation of  the Port Industry Anti-Corruption Standing Committee (PIACSC), led by the Chairman, Mr. Val Usifoh, asserted that the review become necessary in order to have more stringent punishments for importers of substandard goods and their collaborators as the current provisions in the constitution have become inadequate to serve as deterrent to offenders.

Akanya also described the Committee as a critical stakeholder to SON in helping to arrest corruption related situations before they get out of hand, and, he urged its members to assist the organization flush out anyone not complying with the procedures put in place for smooth operations at the Ports and borders to serve as example to all.

According to him, some of the measures put in place by SON to curb corruption among its staff include, regular rotation, written sampling and financial procedures which are made available to all stakeholders, proper documentation of Laboratory Tests and analysis as well as return of some samples, reference procedures and an open door policy to receive complaints and treat them promptly.
