Sallah break: FEC meeting fails to hold

By Daniel Idonor
ABUJA — THE weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), usually presided over by President Umaru Yar’Adua, yesterday failed to hold because the cabinet office in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation failed to prepare memos that would be discussed at the meeting, due to the Sallah break.

Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, who fielded questions from State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said due to the long holiday it was impossible for the cabinet office to prepare the relevant memos for the meeting.

According to Akunyili, “you know that Monday and Tuesday were public holidays.

We had a meeting on Wednesday (last week) and we usually use Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday to prepare for the Wednesday meeting.

She stressed that “these meetings do not just come; we prepare for it, submit memos, and go through the memos before we come for the meeting.

So there was no time to prepare for it that is why we could not hold it today. It is as a result of the public holiday”.

Asked why the government was not proactive in its plans before the announcement of the Sallah holiday, Akunyili said “you know that that depends on the sighting of the moon”.
