Railway pensioners protest over N70bn arrears

By Tordue Salem

ABUJA—The Railways section of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), yesterday took to the streets of Abuja to demand an immediate  payment of over70 billion Naira owed them by the Corporation in pension arrears.

The members said they were propelled to stage the peaceful protest to call the attention of the Federal Government to their plight which has already claimed several of their members who died fighting to get their benefits.

“After several futile attempts to persuade the Federal Government to conduct the long awaited verification exercise towards the payment of our outstanding arrears, we are compelled to organise this public rally in order to draw the attention of the Federal Government to our plight, which is the non-payment of our outstanding arrears over the years,” Chairman of the branch, Alhaji M. A. Abdulahi had told newsmen during the protest in Abuja.

He said their action stemmed from the discovery that the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) was ready to pay the arrears, but was constrained by lack of adequate funds.
