ASABAâ€”DELTA State police command says it has arrested a one-time Chairman of Isoko South local government council (names withheld) for allegedly invading Irri community with hired armed men.
A statement signed by the State Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Charles Muka, weekend, stated that â€œon September 23, 2009, one (names withheld) â€˜maleâ€™, former Chairman of Isoko South local government area allegedly hired the services of gun men, later identified to be members of Ughelli vigilante group and brought them into Irri community which has been having violent crisis with Oleh communityâ€.
According to the statement, â€œthe police got information of sporadic firing within the community and promptly moved in and arrested the suspects.Â Among those arrested are the former chairman and ten others (all names withheld).â€
The PPRO said items recovered from them include one pump action gun, four single barrel guns, one double barrel gun, 34 live cartridges, among others.
He said the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Asaba, for discreet investigation into their involvement in the crisis- ridden community and would soon appear in court.
