PHCN director re-assures on FG’s 6,000mw target

UGHELLI—THE Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer, Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Engr. Huissaini Labo, has assured that the Federal Government was leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the proposed generation of 6,000 mega watts of electricity by the end of this year was attained.

He said authorities of PHCN were in constant touch with the Ministry of Petroleum and Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to facilitate adequate supply of gas needed for the generation of the 6,000  mega watts’ target.
Labo, who spoke while inspecting the installation and maintenance work at Sapele and Ughelli Power Generating Stations, expressed satisfaction with the progress so far made at the stations.

He said:   “In the first quarter, we were articulating what we have to do, in the second quarter, we presented that to the Federal Government.

“They have approved and released the funds, giving the local management the authority to award the contracts, they have done that, and you can see the contractors working.

“We are here to see if the work is actually going on and see how far it has gone and to confirm if we can meet the deadline of completion. We have been assured by the local management and the contractor that everything is on course”.

He disclosed that 90 percent completion of work on the Turbines at power generating stations have been achieved, adding that a 60 MVA transformer was being installed at Ughelli generating station to replace the burnt transformer.
Labo further disclosed that PHCN staff salaries and other remunerations were being increased by 13 percent, adding that subsequent increment would come up when generation improved.

“We have sent this request to the Salaries and Wages Commission for approval and it is being given urgent attention,” he said.
