Kutigi clears air on Uyo constituency seat

By Ise-Oluwa Ige

ABUJA – The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, yesterday clarified that there is a valid appeal on the 2007 Uyo Federal Constituency poll pending before the Supreme Court.

He said the clarification on the status of the court case pending before the Supreme Court was necessary to put the record straight and lay to rest all controversies surrounding same.

The issue in dispute in the case touches on who is the real candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2007 poll into the Uyo Federal constituency seat.

One Emmanuel Obot, former aide to ex-Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Victor Attah, commenced the law suit before the Abuja division of the Federal high court.

The case has travelled from the high court which is a court of first instance on the pre-election matter raised therein to the Supreme Court where it is awaiting trial.

But Obot who got judgment in his favour at the Court of Appeal is asking INEC to swear him in on the grounds that his opponent and member of House of Representatives, Hon Etim did not appeal the judgment of the lower court before the Supreme Court.
