The Imo state government has been advised to make rural areas the focus of development in order to stem the rapid migration of youths from the rural to urban cities across the country.
A Presidential aspirant of the Imo State Towns Development Association Lagos (ISTDAL), Mrs. Blessing Mbonu, who gave the advice in Lagos at the weekend, said such empowerment, through the provision of basic social amenities and necessary infrastructure would also lead to rapid development of the state.
Speaking to newsmen, Lolo Mbonu, who is currently the First Vice President of ISTDAL, said “for the state to achieve rapid development, the state government should empower the rural areas in order for them to engage in cottage industriesâ€, adding that this would also stem the tide of rapid migration from rural to urban areas, especially by the youths.
She lamented that most rural dwellers, especially the youths and men and women of productive age, are deserting the state to various cities across the country, where they go to contribute to the development of those states to the detriment of their state (Imo).
“Most of these youths are well educated and have skills which they can only put in good use in he rural areas if they have the basic infrastructures such as roads, water and electricityâ€, she said, adding that one of the aims of the Association is to mobilize the various Imo State Town Unions in the Diaspora to contribute to the development of the state.
