A member of the Gulder  Ultimate Search 6 team, Elvis Abogun, has been appointed Youth Ambassador by the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko. The new ambassador was also awarded scholarship to the master’s degree level in any university of his choice.
Welcoming the Gulder Ultimate Search 6 contestants into the ancient city of Akure on Friday in his office, Mimiko commended the initiators of the project, Nigerian Breweries Plc for inculcating in the Nigerian youths the spirit of resilience, doggedness and high intellectual capacity for total mental and physical development of the participants of the annual contest, a statement said.
“’The first time I watched the programme a couple of years back, I was against the kind of rigour the participants were subjected to; but I later fell in love with the programme having seen the mental and physical development of our children that take part in the competition every year’’, he said, adding, ‘’the vision of GUS was well thought and I commend NB Plc’.â€
According to the Governor, through the project, NB Plc has been able to constructively engage the youths of this nation whom he said are facing a lot of challenges. ‘’Here is a country of challenges for the youths; particularly, in the areas of mass unemployment, non-availability of drinking water, poor power supply and insecurity’’.
He noted that Nigeria of tomorrow can only be built on those qualities that sustained the Gulder Ultimate Search contestants in the jungle, stressing, ‘’the real sustainable success is one that emanates from hard-work and passion for achieving set goals’’. He urged the youths to shun ill-gotten wealth and adopt people of high integrity as their role models.
The Governor who disclosed that the state Executive Council meeting had to be suspended mid-way to receive the GUS heroes, said ‘’we are particularly happy that one of our sons is one of you’’. He however, announced the appointment of Elvis Abogun as the state youth ambassador with full scholarship through the master’s degree level in the university.
“Your appointment as youth ambassador carries with it a full scholarship through second degree while completion of your bachelor degree program shall be borne by the Ondo State Government’,†Mimiko assured.
He said the new ambassador would work with the state commissioner for Education on projects that would be of immense benefit to the youths of the state.
Describing the GUS 6 heroes as role models for the Nigerian youths, Mimiko urged other corporate organizations to emulate Nigerian Breweries Plc by designing projects that would constructively engage the Nigerian youths and prevent them from engaging in crimes. ‘’What makes us tick in Ondo State is not in our natural minerals but what we have in our cerebral endowment-what we have been able to do as a people on knowledge acquisition’’
