All is set for the tribute ceremony organised by Edo State Government in conjunction with Labour and Civil Societies scheduled for today (Saturday) in honour of Late Gani Fawehinmi at Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Dignitaries expected to grace the occasion are the first Civilian Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Labaran Maku, President, West African Bar Association, Mr. Femi Falana, President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, Mr. Ledum Mitee.

Among others are the Coordinator of the Civil Society Coalition for the North, Mallam Shehu Sani, National Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP) , Bar. Osagie Obayuwana, NBA President, Bar. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), the Isekhure of Benin Kingdom, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure.

The Sate Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said the tribute ceremony is put together because of his belief in the genuine course late Gani Fawehinmi championed in his life time adding that he personally sponsored an advertorial for his endorsement when  he was contesting the Governorship election in 2007.

A statement endorsed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Mr. John Mayaki said, “Late Gani Fawehinmi placed an advertorial on Saturday, 14th of April, 2007 saying there will be Governorship election in Edo State as in other 35 states of the Federation. But, in Edo State, Governorship election is unique in every respect”.

Comrade Oshiomhole, who spoke at the lying-in-state of the remains Chief Gani at Labour House, Lagos, noted that Gani was an exceptional human being and Nigerian everybody would always to identify with.

According to him: I want to say  if Gani has lived for another 100 years, he would not be able to do much more than he has already done. If it is possible to preserve his body forever forever, it will make no difference. The difference he has made, whether or not we  immortalize him, is in his own words, his own actions.

Those of us who have survived, who are still alive here, We are the greatest statement about Gani’s life and therefore you have rights to be very proud. I am looking forward as the Governor of Edo State to work closely with the family to see what we can do outside Lagos to show that Gani was a Nigerian great man.

By tomorrow in Edo state, we are dedicating it to the celebration of Gani Fawehinmi because we don’t want it to be limited to only Lagos because he was a national fighter. And in Edo state we love and appreciate him and tomorrow we will celebrate him.”
