Day Glo bridge world of the rich and poor in Enugu

By Prince Osuagwu
Ordinarily, the  worlds of a medical doctor, brick layer and an Okada rider, particularly in Nigeria, are poles apart. If anything, it is the Okada rider and the bricklayer that should be sharing fences, the medical doctor is way out of their league.

But fate has a way of playing games and the outcome of Enugu regional draws of the Globacom customer promo, text 4 millions, last week, told a clear story that what the rich has, the poor also desires.

The promo for all its worth, bridged that wide gap between the rich and the poor as a medical doctor, Dr Yusuf Ahmed Anifowoshe, an Okada rider, Mr Segun Emmanuel and a bricklayer  Mr Augustine Akor, mounted the rostrum together in Enugu as millionaires, having emerged winners and ready to receive their cheques at the Enugu edition of the Glo Laffta Fest Show, which also served as the presentation of cheques ceremony for the promo winners in the region.
The trio led seven other winners, including a taxi driver, a foodstuff seller and a civil servant, to celebrate life as millionaires in a promo that saw them cart away a whopping one million naira each, just for sending SMS to a short code number provided by the operator in running the promo.

Reviving agelong desire

The winning tally excited the Okada man and solved a long time desire to see his children attain better schools to gain quality education like those of the rich. “ I never expected that I will win. I was just participating in the promo to try my luck but today God has decided to use this means to elevate my children. I will use this money to give my children quality education, if that is the only legacy I will leave for them” said the Okada man as he was handed his one million naira cheque.

Emmanuel’s teenage children are students of Lagos City Polytechnic and the next time they are seen in school, a transformation would have been experienced.
Bustling with excitement at their new status, the new millionaires danced and celebrated with the excited crowd who had come to share in the evening of entertainment thrown by Globacom.

Among the new millionaires who collected their cheques at the event were Mr. Eromosele Franklin, a civil engineer from Port Harcourt , Mr. Augustine Akor, a brick-layer from Abuja , Mr. Ahmed Anifowoshe, a driver from Kwara State and Mr. Raymond Akpo, an Inspector of Taxes with the Delta State Inland Revenue Board.

Others were Mr. Stephen John-Oti, a civil servant from Abuja, Mr. Alex Ugadu a foodstuff seller in Agege, Lagos, Mrs. Omobola Ishie, a Lagos based businesswoman who said she was winning for the sixth time and Dr. Yusuf Ahmadu, a medical doctor based in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Meanwhile the operator, used the opportunity to celebrate a winner in the recently concluded Glo “Win N’ Rule” promo, Mr. Theophilus Nwabueze, handing him over, keys to a brand new Peugeot 307 car which he won during the promo.

The event provided opportunity for winners who are mainly low and average income earners to express their joy and excitement, recounting their age long wishes that have permanently remained at the roof top for insufficient income.

Joy of a winner

The joy of having those needs met again, for them, made the N1m prize money a blessing sent from God worth celebrating with their friends and families.

For Mr Augustine Akor, a mason based in Abuja . “I am just too happy. It’s a miracle because I never believed it could happen to me. My family is more than happy about this. I will use the money to sponsor my brother and my children up to university level”, he declared.

Also to Mr. Alex Ugadu, the prize money came as such a big surprise that he has decided to invest it in tangible assets. “I thank God for Globacom because I’ve been using their line for five years without any problem. I want to start my own house with the money so I can see what using the Glo line has done for me”, he stated.

Yet, winning in the Glo promo also turned out to be an unexpected reversal of fortune for Mr. Ahmed Anifowoshe, a driver and former secretary of the transporters’ union (NURTW) in Banni, Kwara State who had lost three of his vehicles in sad circumstances in 2006. “Glo has rebuilt my life. As a transporter, I can now buy another vehicle and pay the outstanding on the loan I took when I lost my three vehicles 3 years ago. My wife and children are just too happy”, he said.

Greasing the Globacom elbow

The winner of a brand new Peugeot 307 in the recently concluded “Win N’Rule” promo, Mr. Theophilus Nwabueze also had words of commendation for Globacom. “More grease to Globacom. They should keep it up. My family is so happy that my elder brother is here to share in my joy and witness the presentation of the new car”, he said.

The “text 4 millions” promo offers N555m in prizes including daily prizes of N1m, two monthly prizes of N10m and a grand prize of N30m at the end of the promo. Other prizes include free N100 airtime for 10,000 subscribers every day, laptops, I-pods and generators.
