Zamfara Assembly urges gov to probe N1b fraud

Gusau – The Zamfara House of Assembly yesterday urged Gov. Mahmuda Shinkafi to set up a judicial commission of enquiry to investigate the alleged N1 billion fraud during the immediate-past administration.

The House unanimously adopted the recommendations of its special investigation committee which called for the setting up of the probe panel.

The committee said former Gov. Sani Yerima in October 2006, through the then Secretary to the State Government, asked the House to approve a N1 billion loan for the repair of the collapsed Gusau barrage.

Presenting the report, the committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Murtala Jangebe, said that the committee found that the government got the loan from UBA.

He, however, said the committee learnt that the former governor allegedly used the funds for some fictitious and inappropriate projects, while the collapsed barrage was never fixed.

“The former governor ought to be charged for abuse of office and lack of compassion by diverting the loan from its intended purpose toward unrelated expenditures,” he said.

“He should also be charged for neglecting the plight of the people in need and causing his officials to lie in their dealings with the legislature,’’ Jangebe said.
