By Chidi Nkwopara

Owerri – Imo State Police Command has arrested five persons, including an 80-year old man, Mazi Bertram Nwangwu, for allegedly engaging in thuggery, vandalization and looting of a property.

Pa Nwangwu was fingered by Mr. Cyprain Okeke of Ndiamazuno, Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of the state, as leading thugs that destroyed his house over the running of the town union.

Vanguard investigations revealed that two factions of the town union, Amazuno Progressive Union (APU) have been at each others’ throats over the control of the town union executive.

It was also gathered that Pa Nwangwu’s faction was asked to vacate office last December when their tenure expired, but they allegedly unleashed mayhem on the other party that impeached them and set up a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the union until a credible election is conducted in December this year.

Pa Nwangwu’s faction allegedly attacked and destroyed the houses of the alleged leaders of the opponent.

Recounting his ordeal to journalists, Okeke said although the police arrested the suspects on August 15, 2009, to forestall breakdown of law and order, it did not stop the mayhem, stressing that if not for the way his group took the ugly incident, the skirmish would have escalated.
