Multiple accident renders family of 20 homeless

Izuho (Kogi)  -  A  multiple accident involving five vehicles on Lokoja-Abuja highway, Wednesday evening, left a family of 20 homeless. The accident occurred at about 5 pm when an 18-seater bus, marked BENUE: XA 215 SEL, heading towards Abuja, overtook a vehicle and collided with an on-coming truck marked PLATEAU: XA 997 BKK.

According to Umar Usman, an eyewitness at Izuho, about 10 kilometres from Lokoja, a petrol tanker coming behind, hit the truck,  skidded off the road then plunged into a house where it emptied its content of 33,000 litres of petrol and sparked-off an inferno. Another eyewitness, Isiaka Abubakar was prompt in laying the blame on the 18-seater bus driver who decided to overtake in spite of the rain and the fact that he saw the trailers and other vehicles coming.

Another open-body truck with registration number KANO: XD 292 DAL and a Volkswagen Golf also ran into the vehicles but managed to escape the fire. Musa Makama, son of the owner of the building housing over 20 occupants, said that nobody could control the resultant inferno adding that though no life was lost, nothing was taken out of the house.

Lamenting his predicament, Makama said credentials, electronics, other personal effects and household items were all lost to the fire, saying that all of them had to start all over again.

Speaking at the scene of the accident, Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Yomi Asaniyan, described the accident as “quite unfortunate”. He said that three persons sustained injuries while a house and other adjoining buildings were burnt to ashes. Asaniyan attributed the cause of the accident to over-speeding and dangerous overtaking.

He warned against linear settlement along roadsides, stressing that road transport workers should be given necessary training before plying the highways.
