By Dennis Agbo

Abakaliki – Minister for Health, Prof Babatunde Oshotimehin has expressed his resolve to liberalize health services by deploying specialists doctors on Federal Government pay-roll to communities, local councils and the states level.

The Minister has already commenced the health services deployment, starting from Rivers state, where he said his Ministry discovered that the University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital has 40 surgeons, whereas only 10 were employed by the state government to service the rest of Rivers state.

“What we did was to make the services of those 40 surgeons at the teaching hospitals available to the rest of the state, so that they would complement the 10 that the state has and that is what we intend to do in Ebonyi state.”

Oshotimehin, who spoke at the weekend, when he commissioned the South East Regional Centre for Vesico Virginal Fistula Centre (VVF) in Abakaliki, added that the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abakaliki, is to be upgraded in the same manner that other FMCs are being upgraded throughout the country.
