FG approves N70bn for Fadama III The federal government has approved additional N70 billion to support the implementation of the National Fadama III programme, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Sayyadi Ruma said. Ruma made the statement in Gusau on Monday at the official launch of the Third National Fadama Programme.
The minister, represented by the Executive Director, National Food Research Development Agency, Dr Salisu Ingawa, said the fund was provided to ensure that the programme covered all states.He said Fadama III was designed as a step toward the realisation of the National Food Security programme, which was fundamental to the 7-point Agenda of the Yarâ€™Adua administration.
Ruma said the programme was a follow-up to Fadama I and II with a focus on all states, considering that only 19 states participated in the earlier phases. He said 16 million households would benefit from Fadama III, which was expected to end in December 2013.The minister said the implementation of the projects would be based on a Community Driven Approach for Fadama Users Group (FUGs). |
He said the beneficiaries were farmers, pastoralists, fishermen, hunters, beekeepers, poultry farmers and agro-processors.Ruma also said widows, youths, physically challenged persons and People Living with HIV and AIDS were expected to benefit from projects under Fadama III.
The minister urged state governments to pay their N2.5 billion counterpart funds for the Commodity Exchange Marketing Support and provide at least 20 hectares to the user groups in each local government area.
